Once the capital of Roman Britain, Colchester in Essex can claim to be this country's oldest town. Fast-forward a few thousand years and Colchester has become one of Britain's fastest-growing. Its proximity to London makes it an ideal choice for commuters, and getting there from around the country is easy. Types of property in Colchester available to buy can include new build homes, older semis and detached properties (perfect for families), smart townhouses, mews cottages, cosy one-bed flats, two and three-bedroom flats, luxury penthouse apartments, and thatched cottages on the outskirts.
Trains run regularly from London's Liverpool Street station to Colchester. Coach travel to and from the town is easy to find (and very affordable). Because Colchester is in the London commuter belt, it is well served by the A12 dual carriageway, with Felixstowe and Harwich ports easily accessible. People in Colchester tend to move within the town, rather than move away. The fact that all the amenities, attractions, shopping options, and sports and leisure facilities you could wish for can be found in the town might have something to do with that. Wining and dining in Colchester is also great...
Deciding where to eat and drink in Colchester will be your only "problem", as the choice of cafes, bistros, restaurants, pubs, bars and clubs is huge. The Arts Centre, Odeon Cinema, and the Lakeside, Mercury and Headgate theatres are also great places to head for when seeking a good night out.
By including in your Colchester property search sojourns to neighbouring towns and villages (Saffron Walden, Halstead, Witham...) you could come across the perfect home for you. So, it is well worth making the effort to view places there before laying down your deposit. And even if you eventually decide to opt for a property in the centre of town, a leisurely drive through scenic rural Essex can be a delight in itself!
