Guildford has a winning blend of tradition and modernity that makes it an interesting and lively hometown for adults and children alike. So far city status has eluded this vibrant south east town, despite the fact that it possesses the two qualifying criteria: a diocesan cathedral and a university. Nothing daunted, Guildford continues to fight for recognition.
Property in Guildford ranges from manufacturing facilities to smart, state-of-the-art office accommodation, with several top 500 Global companies being based there. Private homes cover the entire property spectrum - from single-roomed flats through modern, new build bungalows to elegant Georgian mansion houses.
As Surrey's county town and commercial hub, Guildford boasts an award-winning town centre, with two shopping emporiums - the Friary Centre and Tunsgate Square - each housing numerous national retail outlets.
Exclusive boutiques and local independents are also well established in the town, and the eclectic choice of eateries includes cosy cafes, international chains and good old-fashioned, traditional English pubs.
Situated in Central Surrey, around 25 miles (43 km) southwest of London, Guildford is a vibrant, highly attractive commuter town with a population of around 131,000. London's Waterloo Station is just 40 minutes away by train, and main arteries such as the M25, M3 and A3 are also readily accessible - as are Heathrow and Gatwick airports.
The town's proximity to London explains its popularity not only with commuters, but also with lovers of sport and art, as the capital's celebrated venues lie within easy reach by train or bus.
Perhaps the only downside of Guildford is that it is undeniably one of the more expensive towns in Britain to live. However, this is more than compensated for by the fact that it is also one of the most desirable places to live - not only in South East England but indeed the whole country.
