Evans Bros today is the longest established, independent, private firm of Auctioneers, Estate Agents and Valuers in West Wales.
The business was founded in 1895 by two brothers – John Morgan Evans F.A.I and Daniel Charles Evans – two of the nine children of Daniel and Margaret Evans, Dolau –Uchaf Farm, Llanybydder – tenant farmers on the Highmead Estate in the Teifi Valley on the Ceredigion / Carmarthenshire border.
John Evans had trained as an assistant auctioneer with John Jones, Teifiside, Maesycrugiau , who was obliged to retire due to ill health. John Evans, then 19 years of age, decided to set up in business with the aid of his brother Daniel, which they did in July 1895.
The two brothers established and built Llanybydder Livestock Mart, one of the largest privately owned livestock marts in the country. It is famous today for its monthly West Wales Horse Sales, which started at the turn of the century and saw buyers from both the British Army and Germany buying horses, before the First World War. Large autumn draft sales of up to 10,000 sheep, Spring Sales of Ewes and Lambs, and sales throughout the year of up to 1,000 Store Cattle, Barren Cows, Calves, Cows and Calves and Fatstock.
Daniel Evans served throughout World War I as a captain in the Argyle & Southerland Highlanders and on the death of John Evans in 1931 he carried on the business with two other brothers, Thomas Roderick Evans, Dolau Uchaf, and Dafydd Evans Dolau Canol ,both also tenant farmers. The latter was father to the present partner Evan Charles Evans F.S.V.A, while their sister Ginnie of Fronfelen Farm, Maesycrugiau was the grandmother of Hefin Evans F.R.I.C.S.
In 1958 Thomas Evans and Daniel Evans took into partnership the present partners Charles Evans F.R.I.C.S and Hefin Evans F.A.A. Charles had returned to the family business after serving in the army throughout World War II, from Dunkirk to N Africa and D-Day.
D.T.H. Evans, after qualifying at London University, served a period as articled pupil with "Rennie, Taylor and Till" on the Monmouthshire border before serving his National Service as an Officer with the Royal Engineers in Germany. He then returned to the family business and took over responsibility for the Estate Agency aspect of the business.
He is married with four sons; Cambell, now a partner, runs the Carmarthen office; Mark is also a partner and assists his Uncle Charles in Llanybydder; Dorian and Rhydian have both left and followed a career in the Police Force.
Since 1958 the present partners have expanded the practice by introducing new branches at Lampeter, Aberaeron and Carmarthen. In 1989 information technology had a major impact on the company, by replacing typewriters and hotocopiers with modern computers and printers. Databases were set up for the livestock and estate offices and mailings were finally produced on computers for the fist time.
In 1996 another major change took place. Evans Bros had foreseen that the Internet was going to be a major marketing force and again Evans Bros were first to capitalise on it by starting up the first online estate agents office in West Wales at www.evansbros.co.uk.
In 2000 a Television Documentary was made on the company and was shown during 2001 on S4C and S4C digital.
So what of the future? Evans Bros are already developing new software systems and training policies in readiness for the 21st Century. These systems will handle the large volume of enquiries from the Internet and the introduction of the new "Sellers Pack ". This coupled with its private family base, enables Evans Bros to give an efficient, totally committed personal professional service to all its clients.
