Visit Florida reports on the possibility of taking in the phenomenon of bioluminescence while kayaking along the Space Coast.

Bioluminescence is named from the Latin for "living light" and literally means the ability of some living things to produce light from within their own bodies.

The tourism organisation explains that one group of such organisms named dinoflagellates live in the waters of Florida.

"On summer evenings, the warm waters come alive as bioluminescent micro-organisms emit light in a shimmering display," would-be visitors are told.

Inhabitants of property in Florida‘s surrounding regions can trigger a display of their own by kayaking along and dipping a hand into the water.

The organisation adds that other ways to make the most of Florida’s waterways include wind surfing, parasailing and water skiing.
