Each year, Florida Keys hosts a range of fishing competitions, some of which are open to international entrants, as well as those who live locally.
The longest-running of these events is the Key West Fishing Tournament, which takes place between March and November, with entrants of all ages and abilities welcome to get involved.
Among the target species for the contest are tuna, blackfin, wahoo and mangrove snapper, with cash prizes on offer to those who catch the heaviest fish.
Meanwhile, one of the oldest competitions sees anglers cast off in September. The Marathon International Bonefish Tournament is renowned for its community spirit and relaxed atmosphere.
And if you would rather watch the professionals during your stay in property in Florida, you may want to visit the state in July for the Florida Keys Outfitters International Game Fish Association Inshore World Championship. Here, international tournament winners will come together to compete.
More than 30 qualifying events will take place in locations such as Australia and Sweden, as well as in Florida ahead of the 2011 contest.
