Property in Spain in the Canary Islands 'a popular choice'According to new figures from the Canary Islands Tourism Ministry, the number of foreigners who stayed in a property in Spain on one of the isles rose during February, compared with the same period last year.

The number of visitors to the Canary Islands in February increased by 18.5 per cent, AFP reported, in comparison to the same month in 2010.

Overall, 2.8 million people travelled to Spain, with 1.77 million of these heading to the Canary Islands, the tourism organisation's statistics showed.

The news provider also revealed that in the first two months of this year, 4.5 per cent more people travelled to stay in a property in Spain than a year earlier.

Seven islands make up the Canary archipelago, with Fuerteventura, Tenerife, Gran Canaria and Lanzarote the largest in the set.

AFP pointed out that unrest in countries such as Tunisia and Egypt has resulted in more people returning to Spain for their sunshine breaks.
