Part of beginning a new life in a different country is getting to grips with the local area and learning about the dos and don’ts.

Once you have found your perfect property in Australia, you may want to make sure you are wearing the right footwear, as men visiting one restaurant in Australia discovered.

According to the Times, John Spellman, the manager of the Tramontana restaurant in Darwin, is set to charge diners who arrive wearing a pair of flip flops, known in Australia as thongs.

"I just had enough, I’ve spent 40 years asking people to wear bloody shoes," Mr Spellman said.

As part of his scheme, he has even added a "thongage" button to the till to ensure that anyone wearing the offending footwear pays for the pleasure.

"Girls get dressed up and put on nice clothes on, but some of the blokes come in wearing thongs and a T-shirt like they’re going to go and clean the car after dinner," Mr Spellman explained.
