Declining domestic air traffic was mitigated by stronger flights to property in Florida and other transatlantic destinations last monthFlights to property in Florida could be among the journeys helping to keep air traffic figures up in July 2010.

New statistics from National Air Traffic Services (NATS) indicate that the month saw almost exactly as many transatlantic departures and arrivals as in the previous year.

In 2009, 11,637 transatlantic arrivals and departures were recorded; in 2010, the figure stood at 11,640.

The data shows almost no change in travellers taking flights to property in Florida, other US states and destinations elsewhere across the Atlantic Ocean.

Meanwhile, the trend for taking staycations may be declining as the recession eases, with domestic flights down by five per cent year-on-year.

It took until July 1st this year for one million flights to be handled by NATS, compared with 2009 when the figure was reached on June 19th.

VISIT FLORIDA Research indicates that air travellers accounted for 54 per cent of tourist arrivals to the state in the first quarter of 2010, with visitor numbers rising by 3.4 per cent to 12.3 million between January and March this year.
