In news that may interest those thinking of buying Florida property, it appears that a state constitutional arrangement designed to encourage people to make properties storm-proof and eco-friendly is going to be passed.
Amendment Three – which was voted on by the electorate as they went to the polls this week to cast their verdicts in the presidential election – will guarantee that property owners who fit renewable energy devices to their homes or add features to protect against hurricanes will not see their property taxes raised as a result.
To pass into law the measure needed 60 per cent of the votes to be in favour and the count has recorded the level of support to be 60.4 per cent.
However, under the rules of the ballot a result where the decisive margin is less than half a percent a recount is required.
Unless this overturns the initial result, those who invest in Florida property will be able to make such adjustments to any property they own without being fiscally penalised.
Florida, which saw a controversial recount in the 2000 presidential election, cast its verdict in favour of victorious Democrat candidate Barack Obama this week.
