Spanish property on the Camino de Santiago de Compostela pilgrimage route could be particularly attractive in the coming year as the region celebrates a Holy Year.

While 100,000 people take to the hiking trail in an ordinary year, in 2010 the figure is expected to more than double, according to Scottish tour operator Macs Adventures.

Although the full route covers 780 km and can take a month to complete, Spanish property anywhere along the trail could allow enthusiasts of the region to become involved in the festivities.

Northern Spain contains a number of townships that are likely to feature on walkers’ itineraries.

Santiago de Compostela is the ultimate destination for the trail, however, which could make it a particular attraction for those looking to purchase a home in northern Spain.

Tourism site SantiagoTurismo.com adds that the city "has attractions for all visitors" no matter what their motives for travelling there.
