Limassol, the vibrant coastal city on the south coast of Cyprus, is arguably one of the most popular locations for international buyers.

The history of Limassol

Built between two ancient Greek cities, Amathus and Curium, Limassol’s roots can be traced back to ancient times when it was more commonly known as Neapolis. The city was believed to be uninhabited in the early years but flourished from 1192 to 1489. The king of England, Richard I the Lion Heart was married to Berengaria of Navarre in the chapel of a castle fortress, which still survives today as a regional museum. Limassol quickly became a popular market town.

In 1974, the Port of Limassol became the major seaport in the Republic of Cyprus, a role previously filled by Famagusta, which is now located in Northern Cyprus and therefore not recognised as a legal port.

Since then, Limassol had a major construction boom and hundreds of new housing units, residential resorts and businesses were introduced. Expats from across Europe have been emigrating to Limassol since the early 60s and today, non-nationals make up 17% of the city’s inhabitants.

As its name suggests, the old town is steeped in history. It offers a blend of past and present, with winding streets and traditional Cypriot architecture, juxtaposed with modern boutiques and a bustling market. The old town is home to Limassol Castle which is surrounded by local and international cafes, restaurants and bars.

Troodos Mountains

Further inland from the coast, Limassol borders the Troodos Mountains, which offer a stark contrast from the city’s pristine seafront. Among the mountains, you’ll find quaint villages, monasteries and churches which offer breathtaking views and a relaxed environment.

The area is immensely popular with active residents of Limassol who head to the mountains for hiking, mountain biking, and even skiing.

Due to the city’s small size by land area, developers have had no choice but to build upwards rather than outwards. Limassol is around 36km2, which is comparable to Oxford in the UK.
