Salisbury is a vibrant cathedral city with an historic heart. The town as we know it was laid out in a grid pattern around 1220, with a market at its centre. Soon after, work on Salisbury Cathedral began. In medieval times Salisbury was a popular stop between the west and channel ports, London and the West Country, but the main industry was wool making. By the 15th century, Salisbury became one of the largest towns in England with a population of around 8,000. Today it's home to nearer 40,000.

The Salisbury Museum offers fascinating permanent and special exhibitions spanning archeology, fine art and social history, Salisbury Theatre puts on an eclectic mix of productions and the Odeon on Canal Street shows all the latest films. There are copious cultural events held throughout the year from music festivals to evenings devoted to world-famous photographer and Wiltshire resident Cecil Beaton.

Leisure pursuits are extraordinarily well catered for too, with a myriad of golf courses, a race track, open country houses and National Trust properties, chalk stream fishing and acclaimed field sports, to name but a few. The Five Rivers leisure centre offers a choice of swimming pools, a fully equipped gym, an exercise, yoga and dance studio, an eight court sports hall, an athletics track and the Take Five café.

Within the city you'll find a great choice of parks, both urban and riverside, all of which are are dog friendly with excellent play equipment for children. Further afield you'll find some of the UK's most beautiful countryside. Salisbury sits at the confluence of five rivers, the River Avon and its chalk stream tributaries the Nadder, Ebble, Wylye and Bourne. They cut a path through the landscape to the sea, their gin clear streams making up the wonderfully eclectic topography that surround the water meadow levels of the city.
