Description
Owners Comments
"No 67 was a home and school when first built in 1895, as recorded in documents found in the attic.
In 1991 it was easily converted from a 6 bedroom, 2 bathroom, 2 reception room, 1 dining room, huge kitchen, huge garage and garden room property into a Montessori school for children 2-12 years old (including 2 tiny toilets!) with a self-contained 2 bedroomed maisonette above. Dividing walls between big rooms on lower ground floor and ground floors were removed with enclosed stairways and fire doors installed.
Since then a large attic bedroom has been added to the maisonette - ideal for teenagers! And the garage has been converted into a self contained office or living area with shower room and kitchenette. A conservatory extended the younger children's kitchen area in the basement of the school.
Brighton and Hove Montessori School has had the privilege of welcoming many different children and their families over 40 years! Many collaborated on bids for state funding, which were on the brink of enabling us to welcome children at no cost, until politicians rejected the positive decisions. The school has now closed with the founder, Daisy, looking forward to living closer to family in Derbyshire.
67 Stanford Avenue has been a wonderful adaptable space and could easily be further adapted or re-adapted to be one, two or more dwellings! Plans for extension are also available.
The front looks out through English Elms to the historic Stanford Avenue Methodist Church and community use hall opposite
From the front garden links a tunnel links to the back. There are vegetable beds, mature apple trees and other shrubs, 2 ponds and a big wooden climbing frame to see over the bungaroosh walls to the Community Garden to the side.
In 1895 the corner with Cleveland Road was a carriage turning circle. One day in 2012 some adults, who worked for the council, came to talk with children at the Montessori school about what might be good to grow if the space was turned into a garden. The children offered to help carry buckets of earth to the site, but, as it happened, more adults moved the earth and within a year the Community Garden came into bloom and has been flourishing bountifully ever since with ever extending community involvements local and international!
From the back Blaker's Park is behind the back garden and bird filled mature trees with playground, tennis courts and extensive grassed areas where generations of Brightonians have practiced football on a slope!"
