Description

The five-bedroom house on Walton Road has been an incredible family home for over 36 years now – but its interesting history reaches back across the past 100 years. “This building was originally the village shop and Post Office,” explains one of the current owners. “It dates back to before 1930 and once had a thatched roof. We moved here in 1989 to run it as a business but had to close it in 2003 and decided to make the whole place into residential accommodation instead. It has always been a superb family home to us, with space for daily living, entertaining and running a business. It also encompasses a completely self-contained flat, which can either be used as part of the main house or as a separate home, depending on your requirements.”

VILLAGE LIFE

The family first came to the area because of the lifestyle it offered. “We liked the fact that it still felt like a village, with a true community feel, while having all the convenience of being close to Milton Keynes,” he says. “There were also good schools close by that were ideal for our three children. The location has been perfect for us over the years, with good access to shops, supermarkets and the city centre. It is easy to connect with the M1 or to catch a train from Bletchley or Milton Keynes into London. Lots of people who live in this area commute into London as the fastest trains take just 30 minutes to get to London Euston.”

SEPARATE LIVING

Situated on the corner of Phoebe Lane and Walton Road, and with wrap-around gardens, the house has two entrances. From the front, where for decades villagers would enter to buy their groceries or post their parcels, there is now access to the self-contained apartment. “This is entirely at ground-floor level,” he explains. “It has a large, modern kitchen dining room, with space for a sofa or a table and chairs. A corridor then leads to the two bedrooms and a shower room.” One of the bedrooms could be used as a snug if that suited new owners better. “This apartment could have all sorts of uses,” he observes. “It could be ideal for someone with older relatives who wanted to be close while also remaining independent or it could be let out to generate an income. It could also be a great space for working from home.”

FAMILY LIVING

The apartment could also be incorporated back into the rest of the property to create one sizeable five-bedroom house. The current layout sees the main home entered at ground-floor level via a different front door. This opens into a lobby and then an inner hall, which leads into another generous kitchen dining room, with a door opening onto the garden and ample space for a table and chairs. “This is another exceptional family space,” he says. “This is where we gathered for our meals as our children were growing up and it is where we tend to be when our grandchildren are here with us. There is always lots of space for people to be together.”

HAPPY DAYS

Indeed, this large room opens into another fabulous reception room. Double doors create a seamless flow into the capacious, dual-aspect sitting room. This light-filled space has also been the setting for many fond family times over the years. “We have lots of very happy memories – two of our girls were married from this house and we have had lots of lovely parties and other special occasions. There were memorable times with our own children and then more recently with our grandchildren. This house works very well for people with children of all ages.”

A FLEXIBLE FUTURE

Stairs from the main hall lead up to the first floor, where there are three very good-sized bedrooms, together with another family bathroom. Subject to the relevant planning permissions, there could be potential to extend the first floor out further to create more bedroom and bathroom space. “There are all sorts of things new owners could do with this house,” he agrees. “It has been very well maintained over the years. We have upgraded it as necessary, installing features such as air-conditioning and solar panels. There is a completely detached office building, which is ideal for someone wishing to work from home while keeping the rest of the property as residential. Yet its versatility means it could suit owners with all sorts of requirements.” He adds: “We will certainly miss it when we move but the time has come for us to downsize and for someone else to enjoy living here.”
