Description

This is a charming Grade II listed period cottage in the centre of St Ives, right on the quay side enjoying superb views over the river Great Ouse and the ancient town bridge (no longer open to traffic). Of part rendered, brick elevations and part timbered construction beneath a tiled roof, the property is much deeper than initially expected extending to approximately 1,681 sq ft and provides surprisingly generous accommodation over 3 floors. Windows on the south-west facing front elevation have been fitted with plantation-style shutters, there is a stunning fitted kitchen and two- bathroom suites whilst the immense character of the building has been carefully retained. Particular features of note include some substantial exposed timbers, panelling, and an impressive fireplace in the main reception room. Entering from the The Quay, the fine, well-proportioned reception room has a fireplace with part exposed brick chimney breast and woodburning stove. A turning staircase leads from here to the first floor and there is also access to the kitchen/breakfast room which has been fitted with a contemporary range of grey and white-faced units, a sink unit with an arched vegetable spray tap, built-in dishwasher and wall mounted gas fired boiler. There is a substantial central island unit incorporating a breakfast bar, drawers, a 4 ring hob and oven below with extractor below. Beyond is a charming snug sitting room (or dining if preferred) with deep cupboards either side of the arched fireplace (unused) one containing a former safe. Beyond the kitchen is a utility area with a glazed door to the small paved outside area, and a cloakroom. There are three bedrooms on the first floor, the Principle bedroom benefitting from a beautifully fitted en-suite bathroom, the further two rooms are at the front with delightful views over the river, together with a re-fitted family bathroom. On the upper floor is a vaulted bedroom room spanning the whole of the front of the house which may serve a variety of uses.

THE QUAY, ST IVES
The Quay in St Ives is a small but historic riverside area along the River Great Ouse, close to the town’s famous bridge. It was once a busy inland port where barges unloaded goods from across eastern England and even continental Europe, making the town an important trading centre.
Today, the quay is a quieter, attractive spot with moored boats, open views of the river, and nearby historic buildings. It serves as a focal point for visitors, offering riverside walks and boat trips, while still reflecting its past as a lively hub of river commerce.

ST IVES, CAMBRIDGESHIRE - COMMUTER LINKS

BUS AND GUIDED BUSWAY
St Ives is well connected to Cambridge and surrounding areas by bus services. The key transport link for commuters is the Cambridgeshire Guided Busway, which has frequent services from St Ives into Cambridge city centre and beyond. Stagecoach operates route 5 along the Busway between St Ives, Cambridge and Trumpington Park & Ride, with regular services throughout the day. Other local Whippet routes also connect to Cambridge, Huntingdon and nearby towns.

The guided busway offers a relatively direct, mostly traffic free route into Cambridge, making it a popular choice for daily commuting; journey times into central Cambridge are typically about 30–40 minutes, though services can be busy at peak times.

ROAD & DRIVING
By car, St Ives is linked to major roads including the A1123 and A1096 local routes, with relatively easy access to the A14 (to the south) and the A1 (to the west). The drive to Cambridge via the A14 and Huntingdon Road usually takes around 30–50 minutes depending on traffic. Park & Ride options on the outskirts of Cambridge can help avoid city centre parking and congestion.

RAIL
St Ives itself no longer has a local railway station (the original station closed in 1970), so rail commuting involves a short journey by bus or car to the nearby Huntingdon station. From there, trains run to London (e.g. London King’s Cross or Heathrow/Gatwick via Thameslink services) and to other destinations across the UK, making long distance commuting viable.
