Description
Spring, summer, autumn or winter – every day at Bromham Mill feels like a holiday for the current owners. This detached, four-bedroom house at Giffard Park has been their home for over 30 years now and, no matter what the season, they have treasured every moment of it. “We feel like we are in the countryside here and yet the vibrant city centre is just 10 minutes’ drive away,” she says. “The location is so peaceful with a spacious private garden, where majestic Ash trees provide serene natural screening. We enjoy direct access to the picturesque Grand Union Canal, and beyond that, there are paddocks and woodland. From the lounge or the balcony, we can sit and watch the changing colours of the leaves, the lily pads as they start to grow on the water and the swans gliding up and down. It is like a scene from a painting. It is so relaxing that living here feels like being on holiday all the time.”
WATERSIDE VIEWS
In addition to the enchanting setting, the owners loved the layout of the house when they first saw it. “We fell in love with the unique upstairs lounge,” she recalls. “This is a spacious, light-filled room that was designed to maximise the views. We enlarged the balcony to three times its original size, allowing for year-round enjoyment of the outdoors.” On the ground floor the owners have created a magnificent versatile space, adorned with floor-to-ceiling windows on two sides and a large sliding glass door that seamlessly connects to the garden. “This flexible area can serve multiple purposes - whether as a large second lounge, study, office or a playroom. We currently use it as a studio where I teach Pilates and every time I step inside, it brings me joy to work in such a beautiful environment.”
GLORIOUS LIGHT
The property has been enhanced significantly over the years. Today it is a stylish, sophisticated and very comfortable place to live. Additional touches have included opening up the kitchen and dining room to create one much larger and more usable contemporary space. Kahrs blonde wood flooring has been laid through most of the house, and the kitchen and both bathrooms have been replaced. All the windows and doors have also been refitted: these now present a modern, Scandinavian style. “We adore the way our home radiates light, and everywhere now feels so much brighter and inviting,” she observes. “Friends and family tell us they also love the abundance of natural light and like us, find it a truly uplifting space.”
AMAZING SPACE
Set back from the road with ample space for off-road parking, the property opens up to reveal a central reception hall leading to the studio, a downstairs bedroom suite, a cloakroom and the kitchen dining room. The kitchen features beautiful white cabinets finished with a gorgeous, dark, natural stonework surface. French windows open onto the garden, and there is ample space for a dining table and chairs. “In the summer, we pull the doors right back, and it makes a wonderful entertaining space. The house has been perfect for entertaining; it has been a magnificent party house and for family gatherings. When we have larger gatherings of people, we move my Pilates equipment and use the studio as well.”
FAIRY-TALE HOME
The landscaped garden, with its seating and entertaining areas, comes into its own on special occasions too. “One unforgettable New Year’s Eve was when it snowed,” she remembers. “We went in the hot tub, which was magical with snowflakes dancing around us, followed by a cozy time beside the firepit, welcoming in the New Year. ” She continues: “on another occasion, for my 50th birthday, my husband & son orchestrated a surprise party that took my breath away. Stepping into the garden I was greeted by a stunning display of beautiful twinkling lights and lanterns, transforming it into a magical fairy glade filled with family and friends.”
PURE PEACE
The ground-floor bedroom has a triple fitted wardrobe and ensuite shower room. “This is a lovely peaceful bedroom – initially we slept in one of the double bedrooms upstairs, but when our son became a teenager, we moved downstairs to give him his own space.” Three good-sized bedrooms are positioned on the first floor, together with the family bathroom. “My husband currently uses one of these bedrooms as his study.” The accommodation is incredibly versatile, lending itself to all sorts of lifestyle choices. The owners will miss this greatly when they relocate overseas. They will also miss walking by the canal and through Great Linford Manor Park. “We feel so close to nature but can also travel to London and across the country so easily – and there are good schools and shops close by,” she emphasises. “We feel very lucky to have lived here. To be able to return here after a hard day’s work – to enjoy the peace and quiet and the beautiful setting – has been an incredible experience.”
SETTING THE SCENE
The house at Bromham Mill sits in beautiful, landscaped gardens. There is off-road parking to the front. To the rear, the garden features areas of lawn and terrace. There is ample space for entertaining and relaxation. The grounds are bordered by mature, leafy trees. The expansive, first-floor balcony provides another exceptional outside space.
