Description

An outstanding Grade I listed 16th century house in a superb south-facing position, enjoying stunning views over Wharfedale towards Ilkley Moor and set amidst 6.38 acres of mature grounds

AN OUTSTANDING PERIOD HOME COMBINING EXQUISITE LIVING WITHIN A CHARACTERFUL EMBRACE

Myddelton Lodge offers excellent flexibility for family living and entertaining and centres around the former chapel room, dating from around 1830, with its huge vaulted ceiling, stained glass window and mezzanine. It is an extremely light room with large lancet windows allowing light to pour in along its southern elevation. The other room of particular note is the former Great Chamber, now the drawing room, with its two grand fire places in adjacent corners of the room.

The further family accommodation within the main house includes a morning room, sitting room and family room, with the potential for use as a gym/cinema room. There is also an office/library, two cloakrooms, boot room and a cellar, accessed by steps from the everyday entrance hall.

On the first floor level there is a bedroom suite above the the office/library, and the main staircase leads up through the house to the superb palatial principal bedroom suite, which extends across the whole depth of the house and also has impressive fireplaces, with a large en suite bathroom and dressing room.

The stairs rise to the second floor bedroom accommodation, with a family bathroom, two further bedrooms and two more bedrooms which share a Jack and Jill shower room, all off a large central landing.

The East Wing has its own driveway and can be used as a self-contained house. It has its own separate entrance hall, a kitchen/breakfast room, sitting room and dining room on the ground floor.

There are two guest bedroom suites on the first floor with ensuite bathrooms, and two further bedrooms, a sitting room and family bathroom.

Myddelton Lodge sits in around 6.38 acres of lawned and formal gardens, with a paddock interspersed with recently planted trees and a block of mature woodland to the west. A

Within the grounds to the south east, there is a charming Grade II Listed gazebo – a delightful area within which to entertain.

GENERAL REMARKS:

Myddelton Lodge commands a spectacular south facing position with panoramic views across Wharfedale, overlooking Ilkley and the dramatic moors, and surrounded by beautiful countryside within semi parkland grounds which include grazing and woodland.

Ilkley’s town centre, with its comprehensive range of retail and social amenities, is only a mile or so distant. The former Victorian spa town, recently voted the UK’s best place to live in the North of England by The Sunday Times (spring 2025), provides a broad mix of high street and colourful independent stores, as well as an excellent choice of restaurants, cafes and tea rooms. There are sports clubs catering for a huge variety of interests from bowling and rugby, to tennis and golf.

The community is home to the popular Winter Gardens along with a couple of supermarkets and even a local independent cinema. The surrounding countryside and rugged moors offer many an opportunity for rural pursuits including challenging walks, road and mountain biking.

For the commuter there are excellent links into the region’s business centres including Leeds, Harrogate and Bradford. From Ilkley train station there are frequent services throughout the day into both local cities, with regular connections from Leeds to London King's Cross, meaning an early start in the nation's capital is a feasible, if occasional, option. Leeds Bradford International Airport is just some 11 miles distant from the property.

Positioned to the north of the Wharfe River, high above Ilkley and to the west of Middleton village, Myddelton Lodge originates from the 13th century. It was home to one of Ilkley’s most famous families, the Middletons, for centuries.
The Cross and Passion Fathers restored a Catholic presence at the Lodge in 1922 when it became St. Paul’s retreat. Until 1985 it was a seminary, a monastery and a retreat house. The Lodge was later sold to the Diocese of Leeds, who opened
it as a pastoral centre. Neglected in the late 1990s, it was later restored to its former glory by private owners, who won a conservation award from the Royal Institution of Chartered Surveyors. The current owners have further enhanced Myddleton Lodge to the impressively high standard we see today.
