Description
This wonderful newly completed conversion of the historically significant The Old Barracks into 11 two bedroom flats, 1 three bedroom flat and 1 one bedroom flat really is something to behold! Up the steps, or the slope, through the oversized Victorian doorway and into a wide Entrance Hall with high ceilings, this building certainly starts as it means to go on! Up the stairs to the first floor and into the flat itself. Flooded with light from the huge sash windows with fantastic room sizes including an approx. 25ft lounge/kitchen are all finished to a high standard, including under unit lighting in the kitchen and dual shower heads in the bathroom, good quality wooden flooring and neutrally decorated; You won't ever be worried about inviting your friends round to dinner. Further benefits include two large storage cupboards in the entrance hall, video entry system and shaver points in the bathroom.
Outside there is remote controlled entry gates for your privacy and peace of mind, CCTV covering the car park and entrance to the flats, allocated parking space, additional communal parking space with electric charging point (for use by electric cars only), communal garden, and a communal bike shed.
Location wise, the Old Barracks lies at the end of a quiet residential street, just a ten minute stroll from the town centre with it's mainline train station. Trains from Gravesend service London St Pancras in under half an hour with slightly slower services available to London Bridge, London Cannon Street, London Charing Cross, and London Blackfriars. Gravesend town centre offers plenty of bars and restaurants for evening entertainment, and array of shops for all your needs. If this isn't quite enough then Bluewater Shopping centre in a short 10 minute drive. For those who like a stroll Gravesend promenade with it's wonderful Fort Gardens, displaying cannons with a bunker museum can be reached within a five minute walk. Indeed, The Old Barracks itself is steeped in the Military history of Victorian Gravesend.
It is one of very few existing buildings that made up Milton Barracks. Milton Barracks was a staging post for regiments being posted round the world to parts of what was then the British Empire, and believe that The Old Barracks was in use as The Sergeants Mess. The last to use it before it was sold in 1969 was the Welch regiment. The basement was the larder of the mess and before it's present conversion there were huge iron hooks built into the ceiling on which hung the sides of meat. It was always reckoned that any sergeants mess in the British Army was superior to that of the officers, in the way of creature comforts. After 1969 most of Milton Barracks was sold off for housing but The Old Barracks remained with the Ministry of Defence and apparently ("apparently" because such an operation would be shrouded in secrecy) became a NATO tracking station complete with bomb proof shelter (the basement again). It was then used by the Sea Scouts as a base for a while before being sold in the early 1990's and became the first internet provider in Kent. Now it has metamorphosed in to what the current owners hope will be a safe and pleasant home for many people in the future.
