Description

This serene five-bedroom Victorian house in Looe, Cornwall, has magnificent views across the bay. Over 1,400 sq ft of space extends across three storeys, including a wonderful sitting room with a bay window towards the sea. At the front of the house, a private terrace is perfect for taking in the views. East Looe Beach is a short walk away, and the South West Coast Path is easily accessible.

The house has been run as a successful holiday let for several years; more information can be provided on request.

Setting the Scene

The coastal town of Looe was once two separate towns (East and West Looe) situated on either side of the River Looe. Once one of Cornwall’s largest ports, the town was a major exporter of tin, copper and granite, and was also well known for its fishing and boat-building industries.

After the mining era came to an end in the 19th century, the town’s railway line opened to passengers, and Looe became a popular seaside destination.

The Grand Tour

A path lined with slate flagstones leads to the front of the house, where a private terrace affords spectacular views across the bay. A sky-blue front door opens onto a welcoming entrance hall with tiled floor.

In the sitting room, a bay window with a neat window seat captures mesmerising sea views. A cast-iron fireplace with intricate tiling and gas fire occupies a central position, and original wood floorboards lie underfoot..

Illuminated by a large sash window, an expansive dining room flows through to the kitchen. Here, smart cream-painted cabinetry has oak work surfaces, and there is a gas-fired Aga and a Belfast sink. Across the rear courtyard is a utility room and store room.

Three peaceful bedrooms lie on the first floor; the principal has a bay window with views of the sea, and there is a shared bathroom with a bathtub. Two further bedrooms are found on the second floor. One has a Juliet balcony with far-reaching views across the bay and a walk-in wardrobe, while the other has partly exposed timber beams. A shared shower room completes the plan.

The Great Outdoors

At the front of the house, a private terrace has panoramic views of the river, harbour and out to sea. To the rear, there is a peaceful courtyard garden with steps leading up to another private terrace. A gate provides pedestrian access to the alley at the rear.

The current owner rents a parking space in a garage at the end of the lane which can be passed on to the new owner; more information can be provided on request.

Out and About

Looe is a thriving seaside town with several highly regarded pubs, restaurants and cafes. It is home to The Sardine Factory, a Michelin-rated restaurant with chef Ben Palmer from The Great British Menu. Other local favourites include The Jolly Sailor Inn, Fifty Looe and The Lookout café. The sandy shores of East Looe Beach are a 8-minute walk from the house or taking the ferry cuts the journey time to 3 minutes.

The South West Coast Path is easily accessible from the house, providing scenic walking routes towards Samphire Bay, Portnadler Bay and the Polperro Heritage Coast.

Located between Looe and Polperro are the secluded twin coves of Talland Bay, a section of the South Cornwall coast which remains unspoiled. The shoreline between the two beaches consists of slates, siltstones and sandstones dating back to the Devonian period and is popular for fishing, snorkelling, kayaking and paddle boarding.

Rail services run from Looe to London Paddington via Liskeard in around four and a half hours, while the Devon Expressway (A38) provides fast access to the M5 motorway at Exeter.
