INTRODUCTION

When Simon thinks back over the past 40 years or so that his family has lived at the Rose Garden, he admits there are so many happy memories. “My brother and I had so much space for playing outside in the garden when we were young and the layout of the house gave us independence as teenagers,” he recalls. “My father loved nothing more than spending time out in the garden at weekends because it was a great way to relax after his busy working week. In his later years, he and his wife would sit playing Scrabble and looking out at the visiting wildlife from the front window. There were all sorts of animals that they recognised, pheasants and deer that visited so frequently they became very familiar. It was such a peaceful place to live and yet it was also convenient for getting into Bedford and Milton Keynes, as well as London.”

HIGHLY DESIRABLE

It was back in 1985 that Simon’s parents bought the Rose Garden, which is believed to date back to the 1960s. “The Bury was a nearby manor house which was demolished in the 1960s and new properties were built within its grounds,” he explains. “This house is set within the original rose garden. There were still rose bushes here when we arrived, and for many years, my father looked after and replaced them.” He believed his parents were drawn to the house by the space it offered, as well as its exceptional location. “They wanted to live somewhere completely different, somewhere they could escape the hustle and bustle,” he recalls. “The Bury is a sought-after place to live and buying this house gave them the chance to move somewhere spacious, quiet and more upmarket.”

EASY LIVING

Sitting comfortably within its mature plot, the detached, four-bedroom house nestles in beautiful, mature gardens with leafy trees. It is entered via a central reception hall and it encompasses a layout that provides great flexibility and easy living. Accessed from the hall is a downstairs cloakroom. Then, to the right, there is a study, which is ideal for anyone seeking to be able to work from home. “There are also two good-sized bedrooms and a shower room in this part of the house,” he says. “This is where my brother and I slept. It gave us the sense of being quite separate from my parents, who slept up on the first floor.”

HAPPY TIMES

The presence of two ground-floor bedrooms provides great versatility. Either of these rooms could be used as a snug, playroom or additional leisure space if required. The very generous sitting room is to the left of the reception hall, where it benefits from a large window. “This is where my father had a table so they could enjoy looking out over the front garden.” A superb family space, this room was also ideal for entertaining as well as special occasions such as Christmas. A door from the sitting room leads into the dining room. The dining room, which can also be accessed from the hall, opens onto the garden, making it perfect for summer parties and barbecues.

GREAT SCOPE

The kitchen, which like the bathrooms, has been modernised, features a breakfast bar for casual meals. It opens into the dining room as well as a side corridor giving access to the garage and outside. “There could be scope for new owners to open up the back of the house, perhaps creating one large room where the kitchen, dining room and study currently are,” Simon observes. “Subject to the relevant planning permissions, there could also be potential to add a conservatory or garden room to the rear. This was something I often discussed with my father.”

AWAY FROM IT ALL

The top floor of the Rose Garden comprises two large bedrooms. One of these enjoys the luxury of a chic en suite bathroom with a freestanding bath. The other has an en suite shower room. “This is ideal for family living and for people who enjoy welcoming overnight guests.” With fabulous countryside and riverside walks right on the doorstep, the property could suit someone who enjoys the great outdoors. It is also well positioned for Pavenham Park Golf Club. “If you need to travel by road, the house is in a good location for reaching the M1, A6 and A14. It is just a 15-minute drive into Bedford if you need to travel to London by train.” Simon says the property is the ideal place for anyone seeking complete relaxation. “You can sit outside in the summer months and hear nothing but the occasional hum of the combine harvester in the fields,” he adds. “You really do feel as if you are away from it all, meaning you can really unwind at the weekend.”
