Description
Comfortably ensconced on the High Street, this Grade II-listed townhouse occupies a peaceful position in Bishop’s Castle, within the rolling hills of the Shropshire Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty. The main house has five bedrooms, a series of characterful rooms arranged over three floors, alongside a shop and office space. Ancillary buildings include a detached two-bedroom cottage and a studio. Original period features have been carefully retained throughout, including exposed beams, oak flooring and an inglenook fireplace. The house extends to beautifully landscaped gardens lined with mature shrubs and climbing foliage.
Setting the Scene
Bishops Castle is a small market town steeped in history, with a rich heritage dating back to 792 AD. Its lively High Street is lined with listed buildings, from medieval properties to timber-framed Georgian houses, giving the town a distinctive sense of character. Dating to the 16th century, the house is replete with original details. Exposed beams trace the ceilings and elevate the sense of volume, while rich oak flooring runs underfoot.
The Grand Tour
The house is entered through a blue-painted front door into a welcoming reception room, where oak flooring sets the tone for the rooms beyond. A seating area is centred around an inglenook fireplace with a wood-burning stove.
At the rear of the house is the kitchen and dining room with bespoke cabinetry, integrated appliances, including a Rangemaster cooker, and plenty of storage. Oak flooring and a neutral colour palette lend a calming atmosphere, while French doors open onto a patio terrace. A shower room with a WC completes the plan, along with a utility area with a washing machine, neatly positioned beneath the stairs.
From the reception room, an original staircase rises to the first floor. Upstairs, four generously proportioned bedrooms are arranged around a central landing, each retaining its traditional oak flooring and exposed beams. A shared bathroom has a freestanding bathtub. Another set of stairs ascends to the second floor, where two characterful bedrooms and a storage room are tucked away under the roofline.
The shop space has separate access from the high street. Currently arranged as a private office, it comprises a reception area, office, kitchenette and a WC, with doors opening out to the rear gardens. The space has separate electricity and water meters.
Towards the rear of the grounds is a detached two-bedroom annexe – currently a holiday cottage – that extends across two floors. The ground floor opens to an entrance hall, and into an open-plan kitchen and sitting room. French doors open onto a private paved courtyard, and two bedrooms occupy the first floor.
The Great Outdoors
Mature gardens wrap around the house, creating a series of secluded spaces. Established borders, shrubs and climbing plants sit alongside an expansive lawn. A patio extends directly from the main house, shaded by a blue-and-white striped awning and lush climbing foliage.
Elsewhere, additional outhouses include a utility room with three-phase electricity and a separate WC, a workshop, and an ancient barn with a studio. These spaces provide scope for storage, extended living, or creative use. The cottage has its own paved courtyard garden, and there is off-road parking for both the cottage and the main house.
Out and About
Bishops Castle is a lively market town, surrounded by the Shropshire Hills National Landscape. Its historic High Street is lined with independent shops and cafes. The town is home to The Three Tuns, one of Britain’s oldest breweries, the Six Bells pub, The Vaults, with its weekly live music events, and the Poetry Pharmacy. The award-winning Castle Hotel is nearby.
Beyond the town, the landscape opens onto some of South Shropshire’s finest walking routes. The Shropshire Way, Kerry Ridgeway and Offa’s Dyke are idyllic walks through the countryside valleys. Longer walks reach the open landscape of Long Mynd and Clun Forest, with far-reaching views across Shropshire and into Wales.
Further afield, the medieval market town of Ludlow is a 30-minute drive away, while Shrewsbury is approximately 40 minutes to the north. Rail services run from Church Stretton and Craven Arms, both less than 30 minutes away by car, as well as from Broome.
