Description

It was the complete individuality of the former chapel building in Newport Pagnell that first caught the attention of its current owner some six years ago. Looking for a home with good space, yet in a convenient location, Chapel House had it all – and more. “It was so different from everything else,” she remembers. “It was an attractive building, with unique character. It had been beautifully converted to offer rooms with lovely features such as high ceilings, arched windows and exposed brickwork. It was very different from the standard square buildings of most other homes.” She adds: “There was something about it that appealed to me from the moment I saw it – and I have been very happy here ever since.”

NATURAL LIGHT

Set across three storeys, Grade II-listed Chapel House, which is situated very close to the High Street, still retains historic charm while benefitting from a new incarnation as an appealing, modern home. The layout could be ideal for a range of new owners, from individuals and couples to families. “It is a very light house,” she explains. “As soon as I walked inside, I realised it was bright and airy throughout.” The red-brick property also embodies all the comfort and living standards of a contemporary home, with features such as underfloor heating, a chic kitchen and stylish bathrooms. “Everything about it has suited me well,” she admits. “I have found it a very relaxing and easy place to live.”

CHIC KITCHEN

Entered via a hall, with access to a ground-floor cloakroom, much of the living space is open-plan. “There is a separate study, with French windows onto the garden. This is a beautiful room, which could be an ideal place for someone to work, or could equally make an excellent snug, children’s playroom or separate dining room.” The remainder of the downstairs accommodation is arranged as a sitting room, kitchen and dining room. At one end, the kitchen has been fitted to a high specification, with an abundance of light-grey cabinets to ensure ample food storage space, and integrated appliances, such as a Smeg dishwasher.

EASY LIVING

The sitting and dining end of the open-plan living space can be arranged to meet the requirements of the next owners. A wood laminate floor enhances the space, while the gorgeous, revealed beams and brickwork are a discreet nod to the building’s historic past. There is room in here for comfortable seating and a dining table, making entertaining easy. French windows to the garden can be opened up in the warmer months so friends and family members can wander in and out from the exquisite garden. “I spend much of my time downstairs in this lovely room,” she says. “There is plenty of space here when I have visitors and it is nice to be able to step out into the garden on fine days.”

INVITING BEDROOMS

The first floor of the chapel houses two double bedrooms, accessed via a staircase with a glass and steel balustrade. Both bedrooms enjoy plenty of natural light, thanks to their arched windows – one room is double aspect while the other boasts two windows along one wall. There is also a family bathroom, with a bath and a shower, on this floor of the house. The top floor encompasses another double bedroom. This is especially spacious and enjoys the luxury of an en-suite shower room. A character-laden sloped ceiling and more exposed beams, together with a large, semi-circular window, enhance the space. “The layout here has worked very well for me, but could suit a family too,” she agrees. “All the bedrooms are very inviting.”

A HAPPY HOME

The central Newport Pagnell location of Chapel House has brought the owner all the convenience she was seeking. “It is very easy to wander out to the shops or to a restaurant or coffee shop from here,” she says. “You can get to the bus stop, bank, supermarket, doctor and everything else you might need – you could not ask for more.” From Newport Pagnell, it is also quick to access the many amenities and leisure facilities of Milton Keynes, as well as the M1 and other major road connections. There are picturesque country walks in the area and yet it is also possible to commute into London. “I am only moving now because I am relocating to be closer to family,” says the current owner. “I have been very happy here.” She adds: “Sometimes when I come inside after being out somewhere else, I think: ‘Yes, this is wonderful. What more could I ask for from a home?’”

Outside

Chapel House has sought-after, off-road parking for two cars. To the rear, the beautiful, walled garden includes areas of terrace, lawn and planting, and offers both sunshine and shade in the summer months.
