Description

Dating from 1683, Just-A-Cottage is an enchanting Grade II-listed thatched cottage, nestled in the very heart of Thurlestone’s historic village. Newly renovated and beautifully presented, it lies just a few minutes’ stroll from The Village Inn pub and excellent local shop, with the area’s glorious sandy beaches within easy reach.

Quintessentially English and wonderfully bijou, this much-admired ‘chocolate-box’ cottage combines centuries of character with stylish contemporary interiors and thoughtful touches of luxury.

Approached via the attractive front terrace, the property welcomes you into a cosy and beautifully designed sitting room, thoughtfully arranged to incorporate both comfortable seating and a dedicated dining space. A charming electric wood-burner creates a lovely focal point, adding warmth and atmosphere on cooler evenings and making this an inviting place to relax or enjoy a meal after a day exploring the coast. The kitchen sits to the rear, offering practical modern conveniences within the property's appealing cottage setting.

Upstairs, there are two inviting bedrooms, providing homely and peaceful retreats, together with a well-appointed bathroom. The thoughtfully arranged accommodation makes excellent use of the available space, creating an appealing home-from-home.

The front terrace provides a wonderful outdoor space for al fresco dining, enjoying a morning coffee or simply relaxing and taking in the charm of the village surroundings.

Held with great affection locally, Just-A-Cottage is an iconic little treasure and a truly special place from which to enjoy the South Hams. Beautiful coastal walks, beaches, dining and village amenities are close at hand, while many of the region’s most desirable destinations can be reached within a short drive.

The cottage's history and its modern restoration were famously chronicled by the renowned local author Kendall McDonald in his book 'More than Just-A-Cottage', which not only describes the history of the cottage and surrounding buildings but also the rich history of Thurlestone from Kipling, shipwrecks and locals plundering barrels of brandy to those that lived in the area and others who passed by the cottage.

Thurlestone

Thurlestone is one of the South Hams’ most sought-after coastal villages, cherished for its traditional character, welcoming community and exceptional setting close to the sea. The village offers an excellent shop, popular pub, historic church, renowned hotel and an outstanding links golf course, while the sandy beaches of Thurlestone Sands, South Milton and Bantham are all within easy reach. Surrounded by beautiful countryside and dramatic coastline, with the South West Coast Path on the doorstep, it is an idyllic base for sailing, swimming, paddleboarding, walking and enjoying the relaxed pace of life for which this part of Devon is so loved.

We pride ourselves on retaining the best estate and letting agents, chartered surveyors, valuers, land agents and planning consultants in the area. Our experienced professionals have an unrivalled knowledge of property and land, benefiting from being able to draw on the additional knowledge from the specialist divisions within the firm when working with our clients.

Luscombe Maye also has deep-rooted connections throughout the wider areas of Devon, Dorset and Cornwall.
