    Once a major docklands area for ships unloading cargo from all over the world, Wapping is now an area of sought-after apartments. The old warehouses are now stunning flat conversions, popular with workers keen to be close to their offices in the City and Canary Wharf. While there are superb transport links from the various stations in the area, you can walk to Bank in around 20 minutes.

    St Katherine's Docks is always a-buzz, with its popular bars and restaurants, and there's still a nautical air, thanks to the 160+ luxury yachts that fill its marina. You can even take a step back in time and visit one of the oldest Thames-side pubs, The Prospect of Whitby, at Shadwell Basin. The pub originally opened its doors in the sixteenth century.
