The open spaces of Southwark Park, the good shops, restaurants and traditional pubs of Rotherhithe Village make Surrey Quays a hidden gem of an area, with river and city views. Wapping was once a hive of trading activity, with ships unloading cargo from the farthest corners of the world. Redevelopment of the area started in the 1980s and continues to this day. Many of the area's old warehouses are now highly sought-after apartments, popular with City and Canary Wharf workers. There are superb transport links from various stations in the area, but you can walk to Bank in around 20 minutes.
Wapping retains its quiet, village atmosphere, but there's still plenty going on. St Katherine's Docks is filled with bars and restaurants, and its marina houses up to 160 luxury yachts. At Shadwell Basin you'll find one of the oldest Thames-side pubs, The Prospect of Whitby, which dates back to the sixteenth century.
