Description

This 4 bedroom apartment is located in a stunning Grade II listed building, historically called The Old House at Langley and more recently known as Rumwood Court. The property is surrounded by approximately 11 acres of carefully tended landscaped grounds, and offers you the countryside on your doorstep
As you approach this grand house from the sweeping driveway, you can appreciate the peaceful setting and imbibe the history of the property. The original Early Tudor Yeoman’s farmhouse was constructed in the 1400's and later rebuilt in the Elizabethan manner, completed in 1599. In the 1880's the property was then very significantly extended, wrapping around the original building, which completed the impressive look of the current manor house. In the 1970s the house went through another redesign internally, dividing it into 7 apartments, this stunning apartment being formed from the original Tudor house. This property will suit anyone looking for a calming retreat, where you can wake up in the morning and look out of any window and appreciate the incredible backdrop that the grounds have to offer

THE OWNER QUOTE

Our impressive 4 floor apartment is the original Tudor house that forms the heart of Rumwood Court, the whole being further extended in Victorian times to create a grand country home, set in about 11 acres of gardens and parkland, with a 100 yard spectacular topiary Yew walk. We fell in love with the glorious surroundings, both inside and out. We refer to the eastern facade as ‘Blackadder’ and the western frontage as ‘mini Downton Abbey’, when describing our home to acquaintances! The position is an oasis of peace and quiet and yet very close to Maidstone and all facilities. Wildlife abounds in the grounds, including badger sets, foxes and raptors.

We have found that this is one of the most frequently described and painted period buildings in this area of Kent, displayed in several books that we have collected: fascinating characters have lived here, from the 17th century Lord Lieutenant of Kent who wrote “The Divine Right of Kings” for Charles I to Lord Rootes of the famous motor car firm in the 30s. During WW2, it was also used as a maternity home and then a hospital for injured airmen.

Practically, despite the age of the building, it is very comfortable with spacious rooms, none of the normal cramped spaces and ceilings of an old building, and with excellent storage facilities. We had no problem with furniture and the like when ‘downsizing’ from a 6 bedroom farmhouse, the square footage being the same as many large houses. We love the tranquil woodland here when walking our dog in the grounds, just off the Sutton Road and yet even locals do not know of its existence, surprised when they arrive at the gates of this beautiful peaceful park.
