Swindon - Wiltshire's pretty "railway town"

Swindon in Wiltshire has the Industrial Revolution and Isambard Kingdom Brunel to thank for putting it "on the map". Dedicated canal construction there in the 19th century brought increased trade, and Brunel chose Swindon as the site for the railway works site he planned for the Great Western Railway.

Property in Swindon to buy or rent can range from luxurious (and therefore pricey!) to basic, yet comfortable and very much affordable. There are houses and flats to suit all budgets, as well as commercial properties available on industrial estates and as high street units.

Commuting between London and Swindon by train is straightforward enough. Trains from Paddington station in London to Bristol and Bath frequent Swindon which is a 55 minute commute. Coach travel to and from the town is easy to find. And Heathrow, Gatwick and Bristol airports are all within easy reach of Wiltshire.

Attractions within Swindon itself include beautiful and historic Lydiard House, the Oasis Leisure Centre (from where the Gallagher brothers took their former band's name), and the Steam Museum. An ideal place for walking, kite flying, and enjoying a picnic in the Swindon area is Barbury Castle Country Park.

Other areas of outstanding natural beauty also lie within easy reach of the town - the Cotswold hills, Salisbury Plain, and Savernake Forest being just some of these.

Swindon - where future captains of industry are born

The Swindon economy is underpinned by both digital and IT service provision, as well as manufacturing. In the South West, the town is often perceived as "leading the way" when it comes to inspiring others. It has an uncanny knack of producing people with an entrepreneurial spirit, and has profited as a result.

House prices in Swindon can be as varied as the choice of properties on offer there - both in the town and on its outskirts. Wherever you live in the area, having access to such an abundance of stunning countryside nearby perhaps explains why local estate agents rarely have any trouble attracting buyers.
